A comparison of smoke modelling tools used to mitigate air quality impacts from prescribed burning

چکیده

Background Prescribed fire is a land management tool used extensively across the United States. Owing to health and safety risks, smoke emitted by burns requires appropriate management. Smoke modelling tools are often mitigate air pollution impacts. However, direct comparisons of tools’ predictions lacking.Aims We compared three commonly plan prescribed burning projects: Simple Screening Tool, VSmoke HYSPLIT.Methods each model dispersion from conducted North Carolina Division Parks Recreation over year. assessed similarity among predicted fields, areas concern potential population impacts.Key results The total area differs thousands square kilometres and, as such, spatial agreement was low. When translated into numbers residents potentially exposed smoke, estimates can vary an order magnitude. Conclusions Our analysis operational program suggests that differences significant inconsistent.Implications While our shows improved more consistent could better support management, clear guidelines on how apply their also necessary obtain these benefits.

Southern Smoke Simulation System - a framework for modeling smoke impacts from prescribed burning in the South

Fire is a natural disturbance in many ecosystems, although one that can have adverse impacts, particularly to nearby communities. Prescribed fire is an important tool for land managers as its judicious use can allow fire back into ecosystems to perform its essential role in maintaining ecosystem health and function while minimizing adverse impacts on the local community. Smoke is the prime adve...

Smoke impacts from prescribed burning in Victoria; developing a risk climatology

Following an increase in the frequency of extreme fire weather in recent years and the subsequent loss of life and damage to property, fire agencies in Australia are under pressure to increase fuel reduction burning. However, at the same time, there is an increasing pressure to reduce the risk of population exposure to smoke. Reconciling these competing demands is a major challenge. Currently, ...

Airborne characterization of smoke marker ratios from prescribed burning

A Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler – Total Organic Carbon (PILS-TOC) and fraction collector system was flown aboard a Twin Otter aircraft sampling prescribed burning emissions in South Carolina in November 2011 to obtain smoke marker measurements. The fraction collector provided 2 min time-integrated offline samples for carbohydrate (i.e., smoke markers levoglucosan, mannosan, and galactosan) analy...

Differential impacts of smoke-free laws on indoor air quality.

The authors assessed the impacts of two different smoke-free laws on indoor air quality. They compared the indoor air quality of 10 hospitality venues in Lexington and Louisville, Kentucky, before and after the smoke-free laws went into effect. Real-time measurements of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 microm or smaller (PM2.5) were made. One Lexington establishment was exclu...

Air quality impacts from prescribed forest fires under different management practices.

Large amounts of air pollutants are emitted during prescribed forest fires. Such emissions and corresponding air quality impacts can be modulated by different forest management practices. The impacts of changing burning seasons and frequencies and of controlling emissions during smoldering on regional air quality in Georgia are quantified using source-oriented air quality modeling, with modifie...
